A year has passed since Kevin Matchstick was poisoned by the Grackleflint venom. Mirth has taken him along with Edsel into the faerie realms to heal. Meanwhile, in the Earth reality, The Umbra Sprite has taken the time to summon every evil creature imaginable, filling The Styx Casino. Kevin awakens and Mirth catches him up on recent events. The trio return to Earth and within minutes are attacked by Rashem and his magic staple gun. Edsel takes a shot meant for Kevin and is mortally wounded. In a rage Kevin picks up the bat and beheads Rashem with it. In frustration Kevin hurls the bat into the side of a dumpster and collapses. Edsel's dying words reveal that the bat is Excalibur and Mirth confirms that Kevin is the reincarnation of Arthur Pendragon. In the back-up Grendel story (which began in issue 6), Grendel and Argent meet alone on a rooftop for their final battle. In the end, Argent kills Grendel and takes off his mask. Argent is paralyzed from the legs down. The police find them both in the morning.
